Barbara Smits Biography
I am a writer, photographer, videographer, digital artist, and learning natural media artist.
VIDEO 1990 to 2010: 1990 - 2010 I own and operate my own business, Associated Video, De Pere, WI, doing video taping and editing work for individuals and business clients.
2008 Produced “A Coming Together - Oneida White Corn Harvest.” This one hour video program aired on Wisconsin Public Television in 2009 and will air for the next four years.
2006 Produced “The Port of Green Bay” video in cooperation with the Port of Green Bay.
1998 Produced “The Old Military Road and the MRSWT” video along with Teacher’s Guide.
1997 Co-produced documentary video “Death Wind On The Plains - The Frontier Army’s Role in the Destruction of the Buffalo 1865 - 1893” along with Teacher’s Guide.
WRITING AND PHOTOGRAPHY 1969 to 2010: 1969 - 1973 I sold art photography to various sources. 1969 to 1983 I published articles for various newspapers and magazines that included both writing and photography.
1961 I completed New York Institute of Photography Correspondence Course in all phases of photography.
GRANTS: 2005 I received a Wisconsin Arts Board Community Collaboration Grant to create an e-book, “De Pere, Rapides des Peres, Rapids of the Fathers - Our place in New France and the Old Northwest Territory.” The book contained many photographs and my writing. I have received various local grants for writing scripted historical music productions.
MUSIC TEACHING AND PERFORMANCE 1973 to 1993: 1973 - 1993 I gave music lessons on guitar, banjo, mandolin and other folk instruments and performed in several folk groups. I wrote and scripted historical music productions.
